Shari Blaukopf-profile

The best thing about our itinerary for travel sketching in Provence is the sheer breadth of subjects to choose from — that, and the near-magical light and colour of this unique part of the world.

In our week together I’ll teach you techniques for capturing the close-up and colourful in villages and towns, as well as the distant and scenic in French landscapes. We’ll sketch iconic market scenes, fields of lavender in bloom, hillside towns and panoramas. In true travel sketching tradition, we’ll pack light — carrying a small bag for art materials and a folding stool.

This workshop is designed to give you confidence sketching wherever you are, gazing at a street scene in a medieval town or the way the light grazes the trunk of an olive tree. We’ll work spontaneously, and I’ll show you how to keep your watercolour sketches fresh and colourful. Each day will start with a short demo and end with a critique, hopefully while sitting in a shady courtyard with a glass of wine in hand. As part of a small group, you’ll have plenty of individual attention as we work on value studies, composition, simplifying a scene and capturing the essence of a place. We’ll focus on having fun while we sketch, recording as much as we can as we Shari Blaukopf-sketchmove from café to hilltop. The aim is to have you return home with a fat book filled with fresh and colourful sketches.

Day 1: Welcome Champagne Reception

Prov-day1-welcomeWe will pick you up at the Avignon train station at 3:30pm. Upon your arrival at our guesthouse, take time to settle in or explore the village. In the evening, you will enjoy a welcome reception followed by a gourmet dinner.

Day 2: Ochre Village of Roussillon

prov-day2-roussillon2Prov-day2-roussillonRoussillon, one of France’s Most Beautiful Villages, sits on top of the world’s biggest vein of ochre, the reddish pigment which has been used by artists for centuries. Paint red houses, ochre trails, cafes, what ever inspires you.

At the end of the day, we will take a walk inside the park, on the Ochre Trail revealing many fantastic rock and cliff formations.

You will also have time for shopping: don’t miss out on the unique reddish potteries.

Day 3: Most Spectacular Village in Provence – Gordes

Prov-day3-Gordes2Gordes, also listed one of France’s most beautiful villages, is the most spectacular village in Provence, perched on the southern edge of the high Plateau de Vaucluse.

The view from the village is a southern panorama out across fields, vineyards and forests, and small-perched villages to the Montagne du Luberon. You can choose to paint the breathtaking panorama, the village houses, or even the outdoor stalls.

Day 4: Market and Canals in ‘Isle sur la Sorgue’

prov-day4-marketProv-day4-SorgueL’Isle sur la Sorgue is a real paradise for painters and photographers.

Its colors are nature’s green and the bright reflection of the water shines from the several canals running through its center.

In the morning, we will shop the incredible and colorful market: colorful arrays of Provencal fabric, tablecloths, pottery, silk scarves, natural soaps with dozens of scents and of course lavender products.

Day 5: Painting in the Village

Prov-day5-homeprov-day5-home2Today will be a non driving day to allow even more time to painting.

We will spend the day painting either at the hotel or in the village: cobblestone streets, 18th century houses, flowers, doors

Day 6: On Van Gogh’s Trail in St. Remy de Provence

Prov-day6-VanGogh1Prov-day6-VanGogh2Today, we will visit the beautiful old monastery of St Paul Mausole with the bedroom where Van Gogh stayed during his very troubled time in 1889-90. This is now a nursing home that has a permanent exhibition of paintings made by the patients and beautiful reproductions of some of Vincent van Gogh’s paintings.

Outside the hospital, you will be able to paint the wonderful landscape that inspired the great impressionist: olive trees with the Alpilles mountains as background.

Day 7: Medieval Village in the Luberon

Prov-day7-villageProv-day7-endThis non touristy jewel, not listed in travel books is our little gem, our favorite village. While strolling the streets you will come to appreciate the quietness and wonderful atmosphere that will seduce you, as it has dozens of artists who live there. This is our little kept secret village, the favorite of all our artists.

Day 8: Departure

It is time to say: “au revoir” but not “adieu” because you will be back. We just know it.

After our last breakfast together, we’ll drive you to the Avignon train station by 9:30 am.

Charming 3-star Hotel in St. Remy de Provence

img-provence-glanum-hotelFor this trip, we have chosen a 3-star hotel located in the charming town of St. Remy de Provence.

This huge house drawn by Van Gogh and, inhabited by Daudet became a hotel of 25 rooms. A park of more than one hectare, dedicated to Provence will welcome you with its Mediterranean trees: secular umbrella pines, plane trees, cypresses and aromatic plants.

img-provence-glanum-pool

The hotel is located across the road from the asylum where Van Gogh spent the last year of his life and painted his most famous paintings. The field of olive grove across the road are the ones he painted 150 years ago. Very inspiring and emotional.

The hotel is located 15 min walk from the center of St Remy de Provence were you can find many vintage and provencal stores, restaurants and cafes.

In the heart of the garden, enjoy the swimming pool and take a nap under an olive-tree.

Although each bedroom has A/C and an en-suite bathroom, they are not the same. Some rooms located on the first floor are a little smaller (110sq ft) and darker but have the advantage of having a little terrasse.

Some other rooms are located on the 2nd floor in the main villa. While they do not have a terrace, they are a little bigger (140 sq ft) and brighter.

Tell us what your preference is and we will do our best to accommodate you. In other case, we will allocate the rooms on a first come first served basis.
