V.I.E.W. by Steve Hill: Windmill and Water Reflection in Bruges, Belgium
Make successful, lively and interpretive pastel paintings from a reference photo!
Steve’s second V.I.E.W. will teach you to use pastels in a simple combination of special strokes that employ quick color layering and blending to achieve luminosity, depth and textures in your finished paintings. After a quick, small warm-up painting a common object (apple, pear, etc.) in shadow, light and color, we will all start working from one of Steve’s painting reference photos, from Bruges, Belgium, where he taught a 10 day workshop with French Escapade in July, 2016.
His step-by-step informative instruction will result in innovative ways to create a complete painting by the end of the workshop. Be ready to amaze yourself and have fun painting in pastels, with an experienced artist and teacher who has taught over 75 workshops and won over 60 top awards in world-wide juried art competitions, since 2004.
Level: High Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced- Max 16 participants
Dates: June 19 & 20, 10:30am-1:30pm Pacific Time
Rate: US$ 178 for 2 sessions of 3 hours each (total 6 hours)
The price includes:
Before the online workshop: You will receive the supply list, as well as the reference photo, plus a variety of compositional study ideas, for you to be ready to start. It is best to print the photo to have it handy during the class. All you need is a sturdy easel or table-top to work from, in your home.
During the workshop: Everyone paints step-by-step, from the same photo. We will all pause at various key intervals, to check progress, ask and answer questions.
Jackie will be moderating, to field any questions (and Steve’s answers), as we progress throughout the session. It will be a virtual, live workshop from your own home.
Steve’s focus will be on simplifying details to create a good solid pastel painting, utilizing design fundamentals like: composition, values (lights and darks) shape & form, color and color temperatures . . . before finishing with a few details.
His informative, step-by-step demos are well narrated, easy to follow and remove the mystery of how to start and finish a painting. (See testimonial below).
Note: Dakota Art Pastels (the world’s largest supplier of pastel products) has offered a 10% discount for pastel supplies for this class. Allow one week for shipping during these trying times with the Covid-19 virus.
Steve Hill Bio:
“I have been an artist since the day I picked-up my first pencils and crayons, making marks on most surfaces. I won my first big award in the 4th grade with “First Place” in a city-wide art contest sponsored by the Red Cross in my hometown of Boise, Idaho. It was a drawing made from memory of the masked surgeons who had removed my tonsils years earlier – an experience which obviously made a lasting impression.
I have been painting full time sine the late 90’s and it has proven to be totally rewarding. I have won many art awards and some prestigious honors over the past decade. My passion is to find special places, both home and abroad, and explore those with every element of my psyche dialed into the joyous, expressive and interpretive language of painting on-site”.
Dear Steve and Jackie,
Thank you both, very much, for providing such an amazingly wonderful zoom pastel painting class. Steve, your ability to break the painting into manageable steps and talk through everything you did made following along simpler than I would have thought possible. Your willingness and responsiveness to questions from each and every student was always focused, kind, and helpful. I can’t thank you enough for helping me learn so much in such a positive way.
Jackie, kudos to you for moving back and forth between Steve’s demos and our artwork, as we asked a myriad of questions. It was fun and informative seeing everyone’s work along the way. Your gentle encouragement for us all to show what we were working on was much appreciated. Your calm manner and clear command of the vagaries of zoom made it a wonderful experience.
I will absolutely take more classes from Steve and look for more experiences from V.I.E.W. The two, together, were awesome and I am looking forward to many more opportunities to experience both again. Thank you both, again. Stay safe, stay healthy, and keep these classes coming!
On Thursday February 15, 2012 Olympia Art League’s members were mesmerized by artist Steven Hill as he painted a pastel of the Tuscany hillside. Steven had an amazing knowledge of art history as well as being a master of pastel techniques. Steve is one of those rare artists who can talk and paint at the same time. He entertained our members with tales of his European workshops and interesting facts about pastel history while cranking out a lovely landscape. Steven is a master at composition using value and color choices for atmospheric perspective.
Olympia Art League was delighted that Steven would come to the South Sound from his home in the San Juan Islands to share his knowledge and enthusiasm for art. Our summer Paint-Out group was especially delighted to have such an award winning plein air artist to observe in action.
It will be a number of years before OAL members can match the quality of Steven’s work, but we did take home some very valuable advice.

French Escapade has been dedicated to bring the artist community together since 2004 by offering plein-air painting workshops in amazing settings abroad or in the US.
In today’s challenging times, we want this sense of community to continue even though we are all confined in our homes and isolated from one another.
So V.I.E.W., our Virtual Interactive Escapade Workshop, is a program whose goal in not only to offer online painting classes, but also a sense of camaraderie in small groups of people painting together as friends. Like in our plein-air painting workshops, we wish to recreate this congeniality that we lack so much when sheltered in place. Our wonderful team of instructors has jumped on board with enthusiasm and has at heart to bring art and comfort to you in this trying time.
From your home, you will participate in our Virtual Interactive Escapade Workshop hosted by Jackie and instructed by one of our art instructors on your laptop, desktop or Ipad.
You can mirror the screen of your Ipad or computer to your TV screen (smart TVs, Apple TV, …). We will help you for the setup if you do not feel comfortable. We will also do a group test prior to the first online painting session to make sure you are comfortable using the application.
With V.I.E.W., you can sign-up for a live online workshop from a wide variety of artists, media and levels all in one place.
Save money by becoming recurrent V.I.E.W. participants with our fidelity program.
We offer 2 types of V.I.E.W. Master Classes:
How are our V.I.E.W. workshops different than other online classes?
Email us at email@example.com and make sure to let us know for what teacher you want to sign up. We will send you a registration form to fill out.
1- If you sign up over a week before the online class, you can send us a US check, payable to French Escapade LLC. Address is: 2389 Blackpool Pl, San Leandro, CA 94577.
2- You can either send your payment using ZELLE. It is free. All big US banks offer ZELLE. It is very easy to set up. Go to your online bank account and you will see the option “ZELLE”. It will only take a minute to set it up. Choose firstname.lastname@example.org as recipient.
3- We can use Paypal and use your credit card. Choose email@example.com as recipient.
You will need to download an application. We will let you know which one when you sign up. The application is free and very easy to use. You can download it on your mobile, your tablet or your computer. We recommend using a computer (PC or Mac) because the screen is bigger and it will allow you to see the demo better.
You can contact us and we will help you but it is really a 3 min straight forward process.
We organize a short meeting with all the participants the day before the first session to make sure everyone knows how to use it. It is very simple to use.
We send you an invitation to the meeting via email ahead of time with the date and time of the meeting. When it is time, you just need to click on the link to enter the online session. The moderator will be able to see that you are trying to join and will let you in.
Don’t worry, that won’t happen. There is always be a member of French Escapade facilitating the session. Everyone have their microphone muted and the moderator lets people ask questions one at the time when it is appropriate in the session.
Yes, you paint during the session. After a short demo from the teacher, everyone has time to paint for a specific length of time. During that time, you can ask questions to the teacher if you encounter a problem with your painting. After the painting time, the teacher proceedes with more content (demo, techniques,…) and then again, after that demo, you paint what you just learned and so on. The goal is for you to have finished a painting (or close to that) at the end of the session. During the third session, everyone can share their work with the teacher and the other participant and get feedback from the teacher. You don’t need to share if you don’t feel comfortable but we encourage you to do so in order to receive feedback.
We send everyone the teacher’s recommended painting supplies list ahead of time.
You can turn off the camera via the application. We will still see your name in a black box.
Unfortunately we can refund you. You pay for a 3 session package.
No. The V.I.E.W. workshop is only for registered participants. The moderator can see everyone accessing the session and will only accept the people who are registered.
