By mixing your own greens you are able to create transparent, glowing, warm and cool variations that can be adapted to any subject, season, lighting or weather.
Simply by looking at a tree or field or any “green” subject and seeing all of the colors EXCEPT green will be your first step towards gaining a repertoire of warm and cool combinations to use when painting subjects that our brain tells us are “GREEN”.
We will “name” the green in the painting, and then choose pigments to mix it. These paintings are all in the “spring” palette. Within each are warm and cool colors of different values. Many other combinations of greens will be included during the class. Each new combination of pigments will be clearly identified for future use.
For these paintings, we will build a textured surface on watercolor paper with gesso, then scrape out the tree trunks with small strips of mat board or cardboard, crinkle paper towels to “paint foliage” and once it is dry, create our painting on top. This is an exciting method for many different kinds of subject matter.

“Evelyn, you are an extraordinary teacher — gifted with an ability to provide clear instruction, generous with your time and praise, clearly passionate about sharing your hard-earned expertise, and, even better, driven to ensure your students succeed. I’ve learned more from the workshops I’ve attended with you than I have in the collocation of books I’ve acquired over the past year or so and all the videos I’ve watched online combined. Finding a teacher like you is akin to discovering gold.”
“This was an excellent workshop: Evelyn Dunphy is such a calm, organized, & effective instructor. I greatly appreciated how she managed to keep everyone moving forward, yet allowed people to work at their own pace. In particular I appreciated & benefited from her frequent individualized feedback & critique during the sessions”.
“This workshop encouraged and enabled a huge step in my painting in terms of subject, attention to detail, palette, planning, and patience. The format allowed a lot of teacher-student time because everyone got a front-row seat to everyone else’s questions and consultations with Evelyn. Technically, the computer contacts were really well managed. Practically seamless! Thank you.”
