Sketching in Watercolor (studio and plein-air) in Giverny-France with Judy Salleh:  Sept 6-13, 2025

Workshop Description

Do you struggle to apply watercolour or get overwhelmed sometimes when sketching?

I will help solve your problems by showing you how to make fast improvements through sharing my most successful tips with watercolour sketching. You will receive plenty of individual tuition, demonstrations and examples to support you along the way.

Return home armed with new skills in watercolour and sketching as you will have learnt how to sketch confidently, understand paint consistency and application and mix wonderful glowing colours to capture the magical scenes of  Giverny. I will encourage you to sketch what makes your heart sing!

The subjects covered will be truly inspirational – including French buildings, landscapes, local scenes and sketching the everyday such as your lunch. Giverny and Monet’s garden is a dream come true for Watercolour Sketching.

We will be a lovely small group of maximum 12 artists so I can work with you individually to ensure that every aspect of the experience meets your expectations. There will be plenty of opportunity to have your questions answered and have fun along the way. My approach to teaching is positive and encouraging to give you confidence.

Judy’s workshops fill quickly so be sure to register early!

Claude Monet’s garden at Giverny is probably the most famous garden in France. Monet painted some of his most famous paintings whilst living at Giverny. Each day we’ll enjoy artistic and cultural experiences: we’ll explore Monet’s house and gardens, paint the church in Auvers sur Oise where Van Gogh painted his final piece, visit the auberge where he lived his final days…and much more!

Day 1: Welcome

Giverny-day1-welcomeWe will pick you up a the Paris CDG airport at 2:30pm and drive you to our beautiful location for the week.

This beautiful place is like a “tiny Giverny”. It is a converted mill surrounded by parkland of 7 acre, where a little river passes through.

After you had time to settle in, we will have our welcome/orientation meeting followed by a gourmet dinner prepared by our chef, Nicolas.

Day 2: Painting on location

Giverny-day2-studioIn the morning, we will start the day with a painting session either in the lovely studio overlooking the garden or in the park.

Day 3: Monet's Garden and House in Giverny

Leader of the movement and father of modern painting, Claude Monet is perhaps one of the best known Impressionists and certainly a major character in Normandy’s artistic heritage.

We will visit Monet’s house and studio, and stroll around his gardens.

His house and gardens in Giverny are much visited for their beauty, their water lilies and ponds, as well as for their importance to Monet’s artistic inspiration.

Day 4: Painting in the village

This village is one of the cutest of the Eure Valley.

Non touristy and full of charm, this picturesque little village offers many typical views for you to paint: traditional stone houses, narrow streets and flowery gardens, so many little vignettes for you to capture.

Day 5: Painting in Giverny

We will head back towards Giverny and paint away from the crowd in the lovely colorful garden of hotel Baudy.

The hotel has welcomed in its time Renoir, Pissaro, Rodin, Cezanne buth its first guests were American painters. It was a popular hang-out, center of art and the go-to-place for Monet’s guests. You can even visit their painting studio.

Day 6: Auvers-sur-Oise: Van Gogh's Thumb

Today will be an emotional day on Van Gogh’s footsteps.

We will spend some time in Auvers-sur-Oise where Van Gogh lived his last days at the Ravoux Auberge.

We will visit the room where he died, in the inn that is still a traditional restaurant as well as the cemetery where he is buried next to his brother, Theo.

You will be able to paint the same church he painted, “the Church of Auvers” or in the same field he painted “Wheatfield with Crows” .

Day 7: Painting on Location

We will stay on the property for the last day, giving you plenty of time to finish up some painting and to have one-on-one help from the teacher.

At the end of the day, we will have our little “vernissage” so you can enjoy everyone’s painting from the week, followed by a gourmet dinner.

Day 8: Departure

It is time to say goodbye after a wonderful week full of laughters and happy moments. After our last breakfast together, we will drive you to the Paris airport by 11am.

Au revoir!

A little haven of peace

This little haven of peace is nestled in the heart of the Eure valley, in Normandy, between Paris and Honfleur, 20 min from Giverny.

This enchanting estate will be your home away from home for the week. It offers 12 bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms.

Because of the small size of the place, we will have the chance to enjoy it exclusively  for our group.

The domain is without doubt a little haven of peace. It is surrounded by a 7-acre park with centennial trees and weeping willows which elegantly border the Eure river that runs through the estate.

Our painting studio is a big sunroom located in the park:  it will be available for you to use 24/7.

The chef, Nicolas, will prepare gourmet meals using fresh local ingredients. With his experience in wedding catering, his food will be a delight for your palates as well as your eyes.
