Workshop Description

Come and paint in beautiful Santa Fe with Carol Carter.

“The intensity of color and use of negative space as foundational is a signature of my work”.

Carol will share her unique watercolor technique, painting from background to foreground, using dynamic and inventive color.

Morning: Studio Painting

We will begin each day with a watercolor tutorial of Santa Fe. In the studio, Carol will share her watercolor technique while teaching site specific tutorials.

The workshop will provide templates, reference photos and materials information.

Painting workshop in the studio mornings and afternoons, followed by conclusion and small critique till about 4pm.

Excursion to downtown Santa Fe with some sketching and photographing

At the end of the day, we will walk the beautiful downtown of Santa Fe for some museums visit, wine tasting,  photography and of course we will give you free time for shopping.

Relax, enjoy, learn a new watercolor technique or two among the camaraderie of other artists while savoring great local food.

  1. Learn how to paint loosely in watercolor— all the while keeping your subject representational.
  2. Learn the use of color, pigment saturation, water control, and brush size for manipulation of paint.
  3. Learn how to push color by exploring different and unusual color combination.
  4. Learn how to see “value”in your work to build darks and lights by adding complementary colors.
  5. Learn how to paint from a reference photo and paint from background to foreground.
  6. Learn how to create exciting compositions with dynamic and unusual perspective of imagery.

Carol Carter's Biography

Carol Carter is an internationally recognized artist whose career has spanned more than 35 years.

Carol has taught workshops for over 30 years, as well as in university. Her paintings have been in many national and international exhibitions, both juried and invitational. She has been featured in global publications including, International Arts Magazine, Art of Watercolour, Watercolor Artist, and L’Aquarelle Magazine.

In 2019 she was also honored with Master Signature Member status, American Women Artists and Master Signature Member status, Heartland Art Club.

Carol recently exhibited in “Making Their Mark: American Women Artists” at the Booth Western Art Museum.

She is the recent recipient of 2020 Snehil Lifetime Achievement Award, Snehilsrijan, India. She has exhibited her work in Europe, China, Hong Kong, USVI, Morocco and throughout the US.

Santa Fe is one of America’s most historic, artistic, and fascinating cities.

Known as “The City Different,” the nation’s oldest state capital city is a place unlike in other in the world. 

There are scores of art galleries, restaurants, places to shop as well as a dozen museums featuring culture, history and traditions of this region and the world.

Santa Fe feels like a giant art museum, given how much amazing creativity is all around the city.

Day 1 (April 29): Orientation Meeting and Welcome Dinner

5 pm: Meet your fellow travelers, your instructor Leslie Fehling  and your tour leader, at our selected hotel in Santa Fe for our orientation meeting.

We will  go over the schedule for the workshop and treat you for a welcome dinner to celebrate the beginning of a week full of laughter, painting and new friendships.

Days 2 to 5: Painting in Santa Fe (studio)

Carol will demo every day and give you time to follow. The painting sessions will be on average form 9am till 12:30pm, followed by a break for lunch and a shorter panting session in the afternoon.

At the end of each day, we will go on walking excursions in downtown for some museum visits, wine tasting, photographing and of course some shopping.

Visit of Georgia O'Keeffe Museum

 

The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum is dedicated to the artistic legacy of Georgia O’Keeffe, her life, American modernism, and public engagement.

You will find O’Keeffe’s early work as a student and teacher, groundbreaking paintings from her time living on the East Coast and her artistic revelations inspired by New Mexico as well as a collection of personal belongings.

This will be a wonderful way to end one of our painting days.

End of Day 5 (May 3): Show and Tell and Farewell Dinner


Afternoon:

It is time to finish up some of the paintings started this week. The sketching workshop will end with a little “Show and Tell”.

We will then treat you for the farewell dinner before saying goodbye.

Day 6 (May 4): Departure

It is time to say goodbye but hopefully we will meet again. You can leave at your convenience or extend your stay to enjoy this wonderful place. If you live close to Santa Fe, you can leave the night before after the farewell dinner.

We have selected a very charming hotel located only 2 blocks from the main plaza.

The tour leaders as well as the art instructor will stay there. We recommend you stay with the group so you can benefit from the studio.

We have booked some rooms for the group at a discounted price. Email us  to get the code and the hotel info. You need to call the hotel directly in order together the discounted price. The hotel will not charge your card. They offer free cancellation until 5 days prior to the workshop. However, because of the limited number of rooms we were able to secure, please do not book a room if you are unsure you will stay there.

The air-conditioned rooms are designed with Spanish art work and include amenities such as free Wi-FI, bathrobes and refrigerators. Cable TVs, coffee makers and ironing facilities are provided.

They also offer free full breakfast and free parking.

Price varies with the dates and type of rooms:  it starts at $199 + tax for a traditional room.

Payments:

– $600 non refundable deposit required at booking (see cancelation policy below). The deposit is not refundable but $300 is transferrable to a future workshop.
