All Medium Painting Workshop with Teacher Kirah Van Sickle, Provence
All Medium Painting Workshop with Teacher Kirah Van Sickle, Provence
Positively Plein Air!! For beginner to advanced – acrylic, oil and watercolor artists welcomed.
Bonjour Provence! Let’s walk in the footsteps of Van Gogh and immerse ourselves in the flavors and colors that inspired so many artists before us!
With an approach based on fundamentals of values, composition and color, Kirah will introduce students to exercises and techniques that build brush confidence and achieve bold, fresh and loose results. Inspired by Impressionist and Post-Impressionist stylings, students will gain a better understanding of working with color temperature, complimentary color schemes, “broken color” and the dramatic impact in building contrast and dynamic landscape compositions. Both rural and urban subjects will be addressed, using the notan to establish value planes, and color mixing savy. Kirah will combine instructor demonstrations, extensive reference material and personal guidance directed to the individual artist’s goals and process. Let’s enjoy exploring the amazing sights and flavors…and all that color that is Provence!
Kirah is a multifaceted artist and seasoned instructor in both plein air and studio practices. Working en plein air provides the immediacy, unpredictable aspects of color, time and place. As a certified Golden Artist-Educator, Kirah brings to her workshops an unprecedented insight to materials as well as both traditional and contemporary creative approaches. Inspired by nature and extensive travel, Kirah’s adventurous spirit is aimed at preserving cultural history and reconnecting the artist in all of us to the creative thread that makes us human. Please join us for a positively plein air escapade!!
We will pick you up at the TGV Avignon train station at 3:30pm.
Upon your arrival at our guesthouse, take time to settle in or explore the village.
In the evening, you will enjoy a welcome reception followed by a gourmet dinner.
Roussillon, one of France’s Most Beautiful Villages, sits on top of the world’s biggest vein of ochre, the reddish pigment which has been used by artists for centuries. Paint red houses, ochre trails, cafes, what ever inspires you.
At the end of the day, we will take a walk inside the park, on the Ochre Trail revealing many fantastic rock and cliff formations.
You will also have time for shopping: don’t miss out on the unique reddish potteries.
Gordes, also listed one of France’s most beautiful villages, is the most spectacular village in Provence, perched on the southern edge of the high Plateau de Vaucluse.
The view to the village is a breathtaking panorama out across fields, vineyards and small-perched villages to the Montagne du Luberon.
Although Gordes is beautiful, we will spend more time painting/sketching in the a tiny non touristy village of the Luberon whose name we keep secret!!
L’Isle sur la Sorgue is a real paradise for painters and photographers.
Its colors are nature’s green and the bright reflection of the water shines from the several canals running through its center.
In the morning, we will shop the incredible and colorful market: colorful arrays of Provencal fabric, tablecloths, pottery, silk scarves, natural soaps with dozens of scents and of course lavender products. The afternoon is all yours to paint the canals, the stalls, the village.
Today will be a non driving day to allow even more time to painting.
We will spend the day painting either at the hotel or in the village: cobblestone streets, 18th century houses, flowers, doors…
If we are staying at the hotel in St Remy de Provence, you will have time to paint in the olive fields, the same trees Vincent Van Gogh painted 150 years ago.
Today, we will visit the beautiful old monastery of St Paul Mausole with the bedroom where Van Gogh stayed during his very troubled time in 1889-90. This is now a nursing home that has a permanent exhibition of paintings made by the patients and beautiful reproductions of some of Vincent van Gogh’s paintings.
Outside the hospital, you will be able to paint the wonderful landscape that inspired the great impressionist with the same olive trees Van Gogh painted and the Alpilles mountains as background.
This non touristy jewel, not listed in travel books is our little gem, our favorite village. While strolling the streets you will come to appreciate the quietness and wonderful atmosphere that will seduce you, as it has dozens of artists who live there. This is our little kept secret village, the favorite of all our artists.
Back at the hotel, you will be able to work in the garden to finish up some of your paintings and finish the week with a “show and tell” or critique.
It is time to say: “au revoir” but not “adieu” because you will be back. We just know it.
After our last breakfast together, we’ll drive you to the TGV Avignon train station by 9:30 am.
For this trip, we have chosen a 3-star hotel located in the charming town of St. Remy de Provence.
This huge house drawn by Van Gogh and, inhabited by Daudet became a hotel of 25 rooms. A park of more than one hectare, dedicated to Provence will welcome you with its Mediterranean trees: secular umbrella pines, plane trees, cypresses and aromatic plants.
The hotel is located across the road from the asylum where Van Gogh spent the last year of his life and painted his most famous paintings. The field of olive grove across the road are the ones he painted 150 years ago. Very inspiring and emotional.
The hotel is located 15 min walk from the center of St Remy de Provence were you can find many vintage and provencal stores, restaurants and cafes.
In the heart of the garden, enjoy the swimming pool and take a nap under an olive-tree.
Although each bedroom has A/C and an en-suite bathroom, they are not the same. Some rooms located on the first floor are a little smaller (110sq ft) and darker but have the advantage of having a little terrasse.
Some other rooms are located on the 2nd floor in the main villa. While they do not have a terrace, they are a little bigger (140 sq ft) and brighter.
Tell us what your preference is and we will do our best to accommodate you. In other case, we will allocate the rooms on a first come first served basis.
US $3,190 (double room)
+ US $550 (single room)
$400 discount for non-painters
