Workshop Description

Join award-winning artist and American Watercolor Society signature member, Sarah Yeoman, for this wonderful plein-air painting workshop in the French Alps whether you want to know the basics or to get professional pointers.

“We will explore the magic of the watercolor medium in a enchanting atmosphere. Beginning with a morning demonstration, I will lead you through the step by step process she uses to create paintings with strong colorful darks and shimmering lights no matter the choice of subject.

We will learn to simplify the subject matter by creating value studies in pencil, marker or paint moving on to color studies and finally to a finished painting”.

Sarah will share her years of knowledge on materials, paint application, composition, life as an artist and “finding your light” in watercolor.

Sarah Yeoman Bio

After an early career as a singer /songwriter Sarah eventually discovered the watercolor medium and knew that she had found her clearest creative voice. She has been painting with watercolors for 35 years and is recognized for strength of story and her ability capture the fleeting qualities of light and its influence on form. Her years as a singer/songwriter flow through her process in the melodious and lyrical qualities of her paintings.

Sarah is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society and recently showed with the North American Watercolor Association at the Columbian Watercolor tricentennial in South America. She recently collaborated with the Harlem based Elisa Monte dance company who choreographed an original dance based on her painting ”I’ll Fly Away” which premiered in Lake Placid last summer.

Sarah was a faculty member for the 2018 Plein air Convention in Santa Fe in addition to being featured in the Elie Saab Paris Haute Couture runway catalog with her painting “Flight.”

From her Crows and Ravens series her to Brandywine Valley landscapes to her 40 years of painting, paddling and exploring the Adirondacks of upstate NY from her families, 100 year old off the grid cabin, she is most at home in the woods and on the water.

Sarah is much sought after as a workshop instructor having taught plein air classes in Tuscany for the last 5 years, many other workshops throughout the US and Canada and 10 years of classes in her Delaware studio.

The Alps is a dream destination for a plein air artist because of the spectacular scenery you will encounter: alpine meadows, cobblestoned villages, waterfalls, glaciated peaks, wildflowers, clean lakes, chalet with flowers from windowboxes…

One of the highlights of the tour is Annecy, also called the Venice of the North, a beautiful medieval city surrounded by canals and mountains.

Let us show you these hidden treasures.

Day 1: Welcome to the Alps

Alps-day1-welcome

We will pick you up at the Geneva airport at 2PM and drive to our beautiful chalet in the Alps. Upon your arrival at the hotel, you will have time to sette in and relax, before our welcome reception and orientation meeting followed by a gourmet dinner.

Days 2-3: Alpine Village: from Wooden Chalets to Flowery Balconies

alps-day2Today we will be heading towards the mountains to our new accommodation, a cute chalet in the Alps. The village offers a breathtaking 360 degree view towards Mont-Blanc, the highest mountain in Europe.

It will be like stepping back in time: wooden chalets, baroque church, green pastures and grazing cows.

Cheese is of course the specialty of the Alps. You will find it in many local specialties like fondue, raclette, tartiflette, etc…

Day 4: Chamonix – The Queen Resort of the Alps

alps-day4-chamonix2-alps-day4-chamonix

Chamonix, the biggest ski resort in the world, is surrounded by majestic high mountains and glaciers.

You will have the opporttunity to take the highest gondola in the world to go to the top of “L’Aiguille du Midi” at 12,000 ft. A breathtaking view of the Alps and Chamonix down below awaits you.

Many painting vignettes await you in Chamonix and when you will be tired of painting, shopping will be all around you.

Days 5-6-7: Annecy or ‘The Little Venice of the Alps’

Today we will be driving to our new hotel. Annecy is the French show-piece of lakes-and-mountain beauty. The Canal crossing Annecy brings Venice to mind as you stroll along its banks.

Your choice for the painting site will be unlimited: medieval narrow streets, renaissance houses along the canal, the famous old prison (one of the most photographed monuments in France!) or the Annecy lake surrounded by mountains.

We will also have the opportunity to go to the local market in the old Annecy and shop for the numerous wonderful cheeses, sausages, honeys and all local products. You can also rent a boat and navigate the cleanest lake in Europe, Annecy Lake.

On the last day, we will treat you for a boat ride on the wonderful Annecy lake so that you can admire the mountains and the castles along the lake.

We will end the week with a “Show and Tell” and a gourmet dinner.

Day 8: Departure

After our last breakfast together, we’ll drive you back to the Geneva airport by 10am.
